This saturday started out pretty normal. Chance left for a meeting around 8:30, I slept in for a little longer, then got up to do some chores. I did our dishes, picked up the house, took Spike for a long walk, then gave him a bath. Chance was supposed to get home around 3:30, so I sat down to wait for him to get home so we could hang out.
Chance got home, and he lay down on the bed to take a nap. I was sitting next to him and we were talking, when I looked at my finger and realized....MY DIAMOND WAS GONE!!! Yep, the diamond and the prongs BROKE off my ring!!!
We both jumped up and started panicking. I ran over to the side of the bed and knelt down real quickly to pray. We started to tear the house apart, and tried to retrace my steps, which is super hard because I was all over the house (and outside of it)!
Our next door neighbor came over and helped us move the fridge, and take the pipes under the sink apart. I ransacked our room, pulling clothes out of drawers and ripping the sheets off our bed. While Chance and our neighbor looked in the house, I ran outside to look all over.
I usually walk Spike to the back of our complex where there is a lot of construction. Nobody ever walks or drives back there so I can let him off his leash and throw the ball for him without worrying about him getting hit by a car or running away.
Unfortunately, construction means there's a ton of mud and rocks everywhere. The diamond could have been anywhere. I was throwing the ball a lot, so the diamond could have flung off and flew anywhere.
I didn't find it outside, so I went back to the house to keep looking. At this point, I was pretty much hyperventilating, and we started to consider our options and what could have happened to the diamond. This is what we were thinking:
- Spike could have swallowed it, which means I would have to search his poop for the next few days, and it would probably hurt his stomach pretty bad.
- It could have gone down the drain when I gave Spike a bath. This means we would have to call someone to break the seal and search the drain.
- If it fell off outside, we are screwed, because it is almost dark outside and it would be impossible to find it.
- We have to call insurance, and hopefully they wouldn't care that we already filed a claim earlier this year when our house flooded.
Chance went to go look outside, and he even jumped inside the dumpster to see if it fell off when I threw Spike's poop away. He's so manly :) I was still looking in the house when Chance called me to have me come outside to retrace my steps while he followed me. I was praying in my head this whole time, begging Heavenly Father to help us find it.
We walked to the construction zone, stopping everywhere to look on the ground. It was snowy, so it could have sunk under the snow and disappeared. There was salt all over the ground, which looks a lot like a diamond when you aren't looking too close. If it fell off in the road, it could have been run over by a car or rolled into a drain. It could have been anywhere.
We were getting super frustrated, and were ready to give up. Chance was about to start going back to the house, and I was looking one last time just to make sure. I was standing there when I looked down to my right and THERE IT WAS. It was in the middle of the road. I yelled and ran to Chance. We said a quick "thank you" prayer and went home. I felt giddy, and we both called our parents to tell them the news.
It definitely strengthened my testimony of prayer. I know God answers our prayers, especially when we really need them. We both know its just a rock, and if it was lost it wouldn't be that big of a deal, but I love my ring, and we have already had to deal with the insurance company twice this past year. It would be a huge bummer if I lost my wedding ring, especially since I've only had it for 10 months!
My heart still starts beating like crazy when I think about it. We are so grateful, and I think it strengthened our relationship a little, because we both handled the situation pretty well.
We are having the ring fixed this week, most likely at the expense of the jeweler, because the ring wasn't sautered correctly.
It was the longest 45 minutes ever, and like I told Chance, it probably took 20 years off my life!
Here's my ring now :(
